"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

We've all had that crush on a prominant figure in culture.  Maybe it's always been an actor for you, or a writer that you just can't get enough of.  Some of you may even be crushing on that dashing figure of patriotism, or that chilling figure of murder and mayhem.  Whoever your historical crush is don't worry because I have the book for you!

Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes--from Cleopatra to Camus by Kelly Murphy with Hallie Fryd is chock full of swoon worthy historical figures from all different walks of life.  In the book Murphy gives you a quick life overview along with what makes the person a heartthrob, including their sex life, why they matter, best feature, and heat factor.  From men to women, there's someone in there for everyone (both of the platonic and romantic persuasion).

From the poetic tenderness of Lord Byron to the alluring confidence of Bessie Coleman, Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes – from Cleopatra to Camus, by Kelly Murphy with Hallie Fryd features fifty heartthrobs from the ages most likely to catch our eye and asks the question: Would you really want to date them? The book mines our shared cultural past for history’s most swoon-worthy icons such as Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, and Che Guevara, and ranks them according to their overall "crushability," based on their relative levels of heroism/villainy.
Sounds awesome right?

As for me, I've always had a lady-crush on one Sylvia Plath.

While having a tough life fraught with bouts of depression, Sylvia paved the way for confessional style writing in both her poetry and her fiction.  She is one of my favorite poets, evoking some pretty heavy and deep emotions looking at the personal and private aspects of her life.  What some people consider her best work, The Bell Jar, was published only a couple weeks before her final suicide attempt, and such a brilliant and daring woman was forever lost.  I have a crush on her because she didn't shy away from writing about such intense things and she paved the way for many other women writers to be just as bold.

Let's Get Down to Business!

Hello!  I'm sure you're wondering who this person is writing right now.  I understand, I've been a bad blogger.  But in my defense there's been things happening!  But first I want to wish you all a...

2013 has been packed full of changes in my life.  The biggest of all my job I started in June!  Then my promotion in December!  Oh and I moved into a house.  Just lots of added responsibilities that pulled me away from blogging, and even reading!  I was in such a horrible reading slump the later half of the year.  It had me freaking out!  But I seem to be coming back little by little, which is great because in November 2013 (which I completely missed) Eli to the nth turned THREE!  I've had this blog for more than that, but it's been focused on books for the past three years and I've loved every minute of it!

I hope that you all stick with me as we start this new year.  I'm going to be doing some reworking on what I want to focus on, but it will always be books (just maybe with some other things thrown in).  Also, as January 1st officially starts my Birthday Month (yes it's totally a thing) I will be holding a International book giveaway in celebration!  Details to come tomorrow!
