"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

My Review

Witchblood by Matthew Erman and Lisa Sterle was one crazy ride!  I adore comics/graphic novels, so when I got a chance to review this one, I jumped at it.  Witchblood tells the story of Yonna, a 1,000 year old witch who is traveling alone across the Southwest with only her bird familiar Bhu and her motorcycle, Ramblin' Rose.  She ends up rolling into Carlos, Texas, where some trouble finds her.

I like Yonna as a character; she is fierce, funny, and fearless.  She's going it alone, but isn't afraid of what be waiting for her.  And in this instance, she should be a little worried.   The Hounds of Love, a vampiric motorcycle gang has also landed in Carlos, and they've been on the hunt for blod: witch's blood.

Obviously, Yonna doesn't want to get sucked dry, so she hightails it outta town.  But that isn't the last she'll see of the Hounds of Love.  This altercation builds into a bigger problem, one that finds Yonna making needed allies and reaching back out to the coven she once left.  The storytelling is sharp and makes for an interesting premise.  Combining that with the fantastic art and layout, the reader gets dragged immediately into the story.  Dripping with style, this book was a feast for the eyes in all aspects.

Full of action, gorgeous art, snappy dialogue, and captivating colors, Witchblood is a very fun romp.  Once you dive in, you won't stop until it's finished.  It makes me eager to see what the next installment brings.  This trade paperback combines Issue #1-#10 of the comic.
