"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

Waiting on Wednesday - Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, started by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming/recent releases that we seriously can’t wait to read

Here's my pick for the week:

Undead Girl Gang
written by Lily Anderson
Publication Date: May 8, 2018

Mila Flores and her best friend Riley have always been inseparable. There's not much excitement in their small town of Cross Creek, so Mila and Riley make their own fun, devoting most of their time to Riley's favorite activity: amateur witchcraft.

So when Riley and two Fairmont Academy mean girls die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone's explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders, but they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer...before the killer strikes again.

Amateur witchcraft turn necromancy?  Yes, please!  I love the mix of the supernatural and murder mystery.  Also, look at that cover!!!!  I need this to grace my shelves immediately!  Luckily, Undead Girl Gang hit shelves yesterday across the nation, so oops I bought it!

Chaotic Good
written by Whitney Gardner
Publication Date: March 13, 2018

Soon-to-be senior Cameron hopes to complete her costume portfolio away from the online abuse she has endured since winning a cosplay contest dressed as a character from a game she's never played. Unfortunately, the only comic shop in her new town—her main destination for character reference—is staffed by a dudebro who challenges every girl who comes into the shop.

At her twin brother's suggestion, Cameron borrows a set of his clothes and uses her costuming experience to waltz into the shop as Boy Cameron, where she is shocked at how easily she's accepted into the nerd inner sanctum. Before she can say "Demogorgon," Cameron finds herself drafted into a D&D campaign alongside the dudebro; a friendly (almost flirtatiously so) clerk; a handsome Dungeon Master, and her brother Cooper, dragged along for good measure.

But as her "secret identity" gets more and more entrenched, Cameron's portfolio falls by the wayside—and her feelings for her DM threaten to make a complicated situation more precarious. Cosplay, comic shops, and college applications collide in this geek-girl anthem from You're Welcome, Universe author Whitney Gardner, complete with fully illustrated comic pages from Gardner herself.

(Summary from Goodreads)

I know this book doesn't come out until NEXT year, but I NEED IT!  It sounds exactly up my alley.  I've been a geek my whole life.  I love sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, comics, video games, tabletop games; anything you think a typical geek is into, I'm probably way into it (Marvel comics), or have dabbled in the scene (D&D for instance).  But the places that hold my near and dear are often the realm of the dudebro who mansplains to me exactly what I already know, or just makes me feel so uncomfortable I have to leave.  Which really sucks!  Luckily, being a seasoned lady, I tell 'em to fuck off, but little middle school/high school Eli was too intimated to even try!

The fact that Cameron uses her cosplay skills to go incognito to her comic book store is so awesome, and a possible solution I would've used if I had any talent in that area whatsoever.  I love books like this, that deal with fandom and the geeky side of things.  I can't wait for this one to hit shelves!

Here's my pick for the week, that I seriously can't wait to read:

The Sister Pact
Publication Date: November 1, 2015

A suicide pact was supposed to keep them together, but a broken promise tore them apart

Allie is devastated when her older sister commits suicide--and not just because she misses her. Allie feels betrayed. The two made a pact that they'd always be together, in life, and in death, but Leah broke her promise and Allie needs to know why.

Her parents hover. Her friends try to support her. And Nick, sweet Nick, keeps calling and flirting. Their sympathy only intensifies her grief.

But the more she clings to Leah, the more secretes surface. Allie's not sure which is more distressing: discovering the truth behind her sister's death or facing her new reality without her.
(Summary from Goodreads)

I on one hand want to really read this book, and then on the other hand, I want to throw it as far away from me as possible.  I have a very close relationship with my older sister.  She is my rock; she is my confidant; she is my best friend.  I think that if we were a little bit more damaged, we would make a pact like this as well, which scares me.  But from the reviews I've read, Ramey does an excellent job crafting the story of a left behind sister and her life without the one person that made it all worth it.  Due to this, I am going to snap this up when it comes out.  I'll be prepared with tissues and have my sister on stand-by for hugs.
