"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

Recommend A... (12)

Welcome to "Recommend A...", a fun new meme created by Shanyn over at Chick Loves Lit. Shanyn will post a new prompt each week, and anyone interested in participating will post a book recommendation that follows the prompt. A fun and different way to get recommendations!

This week's prompt is: Recommend a Book with a Character that Plays a Sport

Today I'm bringing you a collection of short stories all revolving around Argyle High School and it's football team.  I wasn't sure I would like this book, but Alden Carter does an amazing job of creating a true high school experience.  Humor, drama, heartbreak, anger, love: it's all within these pages.

Love, Football, and Other Contact Sports
Alden R. Carter
March 1, 2006
A book written in short stories, Love, Football and Other Contact Sports follows the life and times of the Argyle High School student body. Featuring the football team to the social outcasts, each character interconnects in the way that only surviving high school can do. Be it a conflict between a pacifist and a hothead or a feminist and a Neanderthal tradition, each story shapes the experiences of the Argyle High students that teenagers will relate to immediately.
