"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

Waiting on Wednesday (40)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we seriously can’t wait for.

Here's my pick for the week, that I seriously can't wait for (a little late this week, sorry!):

by Laurie Boyle Crompton
Publication Date: January 2013
-------------------------------------------------
When comic-obsessed Blaze stands up to her evil ex, he posts a racy picture of her online and a battle of epic proportions ensues. Before she knows it, Zap! Thwack! Pow! Blaze becomes the target of intense bullying. She must learn to channel her inner-superhero if she hopes to gain the ultimate victory: rescuing herself.
------------------------------------------------
I love the premise of this, and that it is about channeling your inner superhero!  I love going to science-fiction/comic conventions, so I definitely relate to the fangirl thing!  I think comics are a great vehicle for teens to gain confidence because they can read stories about their favorite superhero overcoming obstacles (maybe even some of the same ones the teens go through) and being stronger for it.  I'm really excited to see how Fangirl turns out!

  1. Cute! I remember reading this article by Robin McKinley when I was working on my English thesis about how (it's been a while) reading helps girls develop a sense of agency and power because they see female protagonists defeating dragons and such, so they feel more empowered to do the same in their own lives.

And I think bullying is such an important topic, that on top of this book sounding awesome, I hope young girls can read it and take strength from it to stand up for themselves =)

    Happy WoW!
