"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even 'lame' is kind of lame. Saying 'You're lame' is like saying 'You walk with a limp.' Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he's done all right for himself."— John Green

Reading Road Trip - Louisiana

Welcome to my second stop on the Reading Road Trip, the great state of Louisiana, hosted by Britta at I Like These Books and Hafsah at Icey Books!

This is the state flag.

Here are some interesting facts about Louisiana:
  • Louisiana became the 19th state on April 30, 1812.
  • Louisiana is known as the Pelican State.
  • Louisiana has the tallest state capitol building in the United States; the building is 450 feet tall with 34 floors.
  • Louisiana is the only state in the union that does not have counties. Its political subdivisions are called parishes.
  • The Saint Charles streetcar line in New Orleans is one of two of the nation's only mobile national monuments.
  • The first Tarzan movie was filmed in Louisiana in 1917.
  • In Louisiana, biting someone with your natural teeth is "simple assault," while biting someone with your false teeth is "aggravated assault".
I've never visited Louisiana except for in books, tv, and movies, but it is one of the states I want to travel to.  If any of you have the chance to ever visit, I would take the opportunity. There is a lot of interesting spiritual history, as well as Civil War and current history in Louisiana; it is just oozing with heartbreaking & inspiring stories.  But if you're unable to visit, I'm offering some books that I hope will help take you there!

There will be ONE winner who can pick ONE book from the choices above.
(All books will be in paperback format & may not be the exact edition seen above.  In the instances of The Iron King & Infinity, another book in the series may be chosen)
